Pongola
is situated at foothills of the majestic Lebombo Mountains. It is an area rich in Anglo and Zulu Boer War history. Follow in the steps of Shaka and his impi's through the valley of Pongola, Magudu, and Maputaland.

As the gateway to the Maputoland and the Kingfisher Route, visitors can explore the unique and unspoilt wilderness areas, game reserves prolific bird life and fishing - tiger and yellow fish - at the Jozini or Pongola Poort Dams.

Facilities include a variety of modern accommodation, gift and curio shops, a challenging 9-hole golf course and tennis and bowls. Visit a unique museum where the local communities tell traditional stories and view the artistry of Zulu basketry made from the indigenous raw materials. The Arts and Crafts Centre is well worth a visit.

Activities offered at the Pongola Game Reserve

Sight wildlife in open vehicle game drives, such as White Rhino, Giraffe, Zebra, Kudu, Blue Wildebeest, Warthog, Nyala, Imapala and other game. Venture on guided Rhino tracking trails, and view these amazing creatures from a concealed spot in the bush.

Canoeing and boat cruises provide ideal bird watching adventures as well as an exciting and adventurous way of sighting animals from a different view. For a more luxurious boat cruise, venture on the Fish Eagle Safari boat cruise. Relax at leisure and enjoy nature on the Fish Eagle which has a licenced cash bar and Sundeck onboard, as well as a Kitchen and toilets. Whcih ever you prefer, two cruises daily are available, the morning cruise includes brunch or lunch, and the Sundowner cruise includes snacks.

Guided walks provide education on the environment, conservation and nature. Another exciting adventure available is cycling game trails, a perfect opportunity to enjoy the scenery and sight animals in their natural environment. (Mountain bikes not provided).

Tiger Fishing is available in the 13,276ha Pongolapoort Dam, or if you prefer Charted Fishing with a professional guide, this is available on request. Boats are also availabe for hire.

Birding in Ithala Game Reserve

Ithala is one of the gems of Zululand and is popular with local and foreign birders alike. Ithala is situated between Ngotshe Mountain in the south and the Phongola River in the north and is 29 000ha in size. With an altitudinal difference in the reserve of 1000m, both lowland and highland birds are present. The topography is dominated by rolling hills and high cliffs, with wooded drainage lines, riverine forest, grassland and thornveld habitats predominating. This diversity of habitats has attracted about 330 species of birds.
