New format for Empangeni off-road race

The fifth round of the SA National Off-Road Motorcycle championship – and the fourth of the corresponding quad series – will be held in the area around the KwaZulu Natal town of Empangeni on July 6-7.
The Irvine Bell Off-Road Challenge, named after the founder of the sponsoring company, was started in 2005 as a regional event and will enjoy National staus for the first time in 2007.

It will also be presented in a different format than usual, with the motorcycle competitors racing on Friday, July 6 only, and the quads taking over the course on Saturday.

The 118km route will take competitors through natural bush, cane, grasslands, plantations, sand and some wet sections – but the real action, including the start, finish and the main service area, will be at the airstrip. National competitors will complete the route three times (354km) while the race distance for participants in the various other championships (Regional, Club, Silver Cup, Senior Pro, Master and Ladies Classes) will be shortened accordingly.

The event will start at 6.30am on Friday, July 6 with documentation and scrutineering for all the motorcycle competitors. They will start in a seeded order with the first rider away at 9am.

The same times and procedures will apply for the quad race on Saturday, July 7 and there will be separate prize-giving functions on the Friday and Saturday evenings.
