Two new hotels proposed for City

harbourVisitors to the City of uMhlathuze could have two new hotels in which to stay should plans by developers get the green light from authorities.

Developers, Schoonies Vyf, has proposed the construction of a new waterfront hotel at the Richards Bay Small Craft Harbour.  Guy Nicolson Consulting of Durban has been appointed to conduct the EIA for the project and held an open public meeting at the beginning of February to outline the EIA procedures and provide details of the proposed hotel.

Although no plans have yet been submitted to Council, the proposal is to build a four-storey hotel, with about 80 rooms, on the corner of Pioneer and Bridgetown Roads in the Small Craft Harbour.

The affected properties are owned by Propnet and zoned as "Harbour Resort", which permits such a development.

Plans for the second proposed hotel, at the Tusk Umfolozi Casino site in Empangeni, have recently been submitted to the Integrated Development Planning Department and will serve before Council in due course.

In the meantime the developers have received Council’s agreement in principle to purchase a portion of land between the existing casino site and Grantham Highway as well as to close the street between the two sites.

An EIA for this development has already been concluded and a DFA application has been lodged to rezone the street and portions of land.

The Land Development Application for the Casino consists of a four-star quality hotel and 200-seat conference facility of 3300 square metres as well as a Cultural Village of 250 square metres.  The proposed hotel would have a small gymnasium, swimming pool and courtyard area for guests. The hotel also includes a health and beauty spa of approximately 600 square metres. The aim of the proposed development is to support the existing casino.
