Eskom looks at BHP supply

Johannesburg - Global resources group BHP Billiton (BIL) on Tuesday announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with South African power utility Eskom to look at the possible conversion of BHP Billiton's Optimum coal mine into a domestic producer which would exclusively supply Eskom.

"As a result of this initiative at Optimum, and BHP Billiton's stated intention to sell its Koornfontein mine, the company may require less export entitlement at Richards Bay Coal Terminal (RBCT)," BHP Billiton said.

"Accordingly, in the event of successful discussions with Eskom, BHP Billiton will sell around six million tons per annum of its entitlement at RBCT in a phased manner, which will enable new entrants to gain access to the facility," the group added.
